According to Louis E. Fenech and W. H. McLeod, the village grew into a town as Sikhs moved closer to Guru Gobind Singh. The growing strength of Sikhs in Anandpur under the tenth Guru, following the execution of the ninth Guru, alarmed the neighboring Pahari rajas – Mughal Empire vassals – as well as Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb issued an order in 1693 prohibiting large gatherings of Sikhs, such as during the Baisakhi festival. Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa panth and gathered a large armed militia in 1699. This prompted Aurangzeb and his vassal Hindu kings to blockade Anandpur. This resulted in several battles:
Every year on the occasion of Hola Mohalla, Anandpur Sahib hosts a major festival and gathering of Sikhs. This tradition dates back to the time of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru. The guru declared that the Holi festival would be the occasion for the display of his people’s martial spirit. He gave the Holi festival the Sikh name ‘Hola Mohalla.’ Every year, nearly 20,00,000 Sikhs from across the country gather for Hola Mohalla, a festival of color and gaiety. The festival commemorates, among other things, the establishment of Khalsa on Baisakhi day in 1699.
